Ten-day before the 2019 Formula 1 season starts, the FIA World Motor Sport Council, in agreement with all F1 teams, decided about the extra point.
According to FIA website:
“one point will be awarded to the driver who achieves the fastest lap in a race, provided that driver is also classified in the top 10. A point will also be awarded to the Constructor of the driver setting the fastest lap.”
There are three ways to read this system — first, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport point of view. Based on what happened in the last year, which confirmed the dominance since 2014, the German team could create a significant gap between Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 and Red Bull Racing Formula One Team that the Formula 1 Championship could end faster than predicted.
However, for Mercedes-Benz fans, this situation is perfect because this team established an unprecedented competency where it only possible to find in remarkable eras, for example, Ferrari from 2000 to 2004 and McLaren and Williams in the ’80s and ’90s.
On the other side, at the same time, Mercedes-Benz could be the most benefit of it, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing could, on 21 points dispute, 1 point could be determinate to recover “noticeable ground” against it.
The third point is, for a small team, e.g. Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited and in the middle of the pack, e.g. McLaren Formula 1, it is a good chance show some work, and collect more points during the season.
Another important fact is if this system continues next year and Mercedes-Benz keeps leading the championship, the Italian and Austrian teams could give up in the middle of that season and start to develop and invest even more for 2021 season due to the fact huge modification rules in F1.
